Books For Africa Reaches One Million Books Shipped to Sierra Leone

A Milestone of Literacy, Opportunity, and Lasting Impact

Books For Africa is celebrating a remarkable milestone in its mission to end the book famine in Africa: one million books shipped to Sierra Leone over 16 years!

The latest shipment, BFA 36, reached a significant milestone on October 3, 2026, when the container was cleared from the port of Freetown. The following day, the books were unloaded at a new warehouse in the Bureh Beach area of the Western Area Rural District. This shipment marked the first container of books to be unloaded at the new facility, opening the door for future shipments and expanded access to educational resources.

Photos from the unloading show the books safely delivered and organized inside the spacious new warehouse, which has plenty of room to accommodate additional containers of books in the future.

This achievement reflects 16 years of dedication, collaboration, and generosity from Books For Africa, container captain Professor Dick Simpson, Friends of Sierra Leone, and the many supporters who have helped make these shipments possible. Together, they have helped put one million books into the hands of readers, students, educators, and communities throughout Sierra Leone.

Access to books creates opportunities for learning, strengthens educational institutions, and empowers individuals to build brighter futures. The continued partnership between Books For Africa and its supporters is helping equip people in Sierra Leone with the knowledge and resources they need to become productive, engaged members of their communities.

As this milestone is celebrated, the need for books throughout Sierra Leone remains significant. With a new warehouse ready to receive future shipments, there is renewed hope for expanding access to reading materials and reaching even more schools, libraries, and communities.
