BFA Board Member Gives Back to Kenyan Community

Minnesota resident and BFA Board Member Lilian Otieno recently visited her alma mater in Kenya, and while there, was able to attend a distribution ceremony for 22 boxes of books to Manyatta Secondary School in Awendo, Kenya. The First Lady of Migori County was also present for the book handover ceremony.

Lilian served as the emcee at Books For Africa’s recent spring luncheon, and has long supported projects that expand literacy resources in Kenya. Lillian has been a longtime leader of the Kenyan diaspora community in Minnesota.

Manyatta Secondary School was just one of many schools that benefitted from this 5-container shipment of about 125,000 books. Other distributions completed recently handed books over to Kageso Secondary School in Rongo and TumuTumu Primary School.

The books were a donation to Giving Hands Nonprofit, which worked hard to import them in Kenya and is now busy distributing them to schools and communities in need. The shipment was made possible by gifts from sponsors including BetterWorld Trust, Larry Labonte, William Tarpai, and MSD.

One of the five containers was delivered directly to Safina Empowerment in Bomet, Kenya, which is conducting its own distribution.
