South African Girls Start Reading Club with BFA Books

Books For Africa started the Girls Empowerment Collection initiative to inspire and affirm African girls. Now, we are highlighting a group of South African girls putting their Girls Empowerment Collection to use! Details of how you can sponsor Girls Empowerment books in honor of a special woman in your life are below

In Cape Town, South Africa, BFA partner Xoli Fuyani (pictured at right in black mask) recently put a box of books to use for the perfect project:

“It came in perfect time as my girls (Rising Girls of Self Love), including my daughter and her friend, have been expressing a need to start a reading club for the little ones in our street. Today a reading club was birthed by two incredible 11-year-olds: Mbali and Yamkela from Gugulethu. They both love reading so much and wanted to share their love with the little ones in their community.

They recruited 6 girls to be part of the club and introduce the club intention. Today they made bookmarks and learned about how to take care of books, as some have never touched nor seen reading books before. I am super excited about this initiative. And can't wait to watch it blossom and produce incredible empowered girl readers.”

Xoli Fuyani is a children’s rights activist based in the Cape Town area of South Africa. She received books sponsored by donors of Books For Africa’s Girls Empowerment Collection and the Kent Merkey Memorial Library. Books For Africa networks with educators and activists to engage children who would otherwise not have access to reading, and Xoli Fulani delivers on that mission with her inclusive, creative outreach.

Books For Africa also has sad news to share from Molo Mhlaba, a Montessori school in South Africa that recently received a container shipment. Pictured at left is Siwaphiwe of Grade 2. Most regrettably, Siwaphiwe passed away as a result of a fire. We honor her love for learning and extend deepest sympathies to her loving community and family.
