Annual Kilimanjaro Society Meeting Hosts Delegation from President Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)
Cass and Andy Stillman hosted Books For Africa’s 2015 Kilimanjaro Society Reception at their beautiful residence in Woodland, MN. We were fortunate to be joined this year by special guests, a delegation of twenty-five Young African Leaders participating in the Mandela Washington Fellowship at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute. This is the second consecutive year that YALI members have attended the annual reception, and we look forward to continuing to develop relationships with these talented individuals. Guests enjoyed food and drink provided by Jambo Africa and Amara wines, as well as hearing from the Mandela Fellows about the careers and causes to which they are devoted in their home countries.
Books For Africa Welcomes Ambassador Wonekha to VIP Kilimanjaro Breakfast
At a VIP breakfast on May 7, 2015 honoring Kilimanjaro Society members, Books For Africa was honored to welcome Ugandan Ambassador to the U.S., Her Excellency Oliver Wonekha.
Ambassador Wonekha remarked: “One of the fundamental problems [in Africa] is poverty, is illiteracy. So how do you tackle the fundamental issues if you don’t give education? When you give books to Africa, you tackle the fundamentals...We talk of empowerment. Empowering with guns…give us books! Then we’ll make choices. You give us the opportunity to choose."

Make no mistake, there are hundreds and thousands of people [in Africa], young and old, who aspire to an education so that they can become their own agents of change and lead themselves out of the trap of poverty that has kept them down for much too long.- His Excellency Welile Nhlapo, South African Ambassador to the U.S.
