St Mark's Anglican Welfare Committee Book Project for the Less Privileged Pupils of Bangwe (Reverend Chanju Allan Banda) - Malawi

Project Goal: $15,000

Current Progress: $11,125 (74.00%)

Malawi is a small landlocked country and a neighbour to Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. It is rated amongst the poorest countries of the world. Actually the majority of the population lives on less than a dollar per day. All public service organs of government underdeliver due to lack of essential resources as poverty is the order of the day. The education sector is no exception; schools suffer a critical lack of books and essential school supplies. Teaching is more often than not teacher-centric: the teacher acts as the sole databank of knowledge as he or she is the only person with access to valuable books. Bangwe Community Schools are also hit by a critical lack of books and face a teacher-centric approach to teaching and learning.

The St. Mark's Welfare Committee--a church and society arm of the Anglican Church in Bangwe, Malawi--sees this lack of educational material as a critical problem. As such, the Committee will partner with BFA to transport books to Bangwe in order to alleviate the plight of learners in at least ten community schools by making valuable books available to them. The books will be distributed to schools ranging from kindergarten classrooms to secondary schools.

The fundraising process will be a challenge, as huge sums of money are required to ship the container of books to Malawi from the U.S.A. I humbly invite all well wishers to donate generously towards the success of this project. Any contribution towards this noble cause will be a valuable contribution towards the futures of the less-privileged pupils in Bangwe.

St Mark's Welfare Committee pledges to shoulder port and clearance charges and any local transportation costs in the process of distribution. The committee will see to it that teacher and student librarians are given special  training on the management of books.

Note that thanks to a generous donor, all donations toward this project will be MATCHED, dollar for dollar.
